GRACIE – Private Studio Tour

By danielle

avatar

Gracie hosted a top-notch editor’s event on Thursday evening that included a private tour of their design studio. Gracie is a fourth generation family owned and operated company that is tantamount to luxury. The specially selected editors received a handpainted invitation and were treated to Asian inspired delights by Serena Bass – I experienced my first (and second) lychee sakitini. Gracie is renowned for their handpainted Chinoiserie wallpapers and natural cashew-lacquer furnishings. It was a thrill to see the artists in the studio actually painting the custom Chinese scenics in the centuries-old tradition. I had seen these intricate wallpapers on their website prior to the event, but nothing prepared me for the beauty of seeing them in person!

Modern on the Inside – A Night at the A&D Building with Dwell Magazine

By danielle

When two industry leaders as reputable as New York’s A&D Building, and dwell Magazine partner together for an event, you can bet that it will be a good one. The location, did we mention that the A&D Building is the second largest kitchen and bath center in the US, was just right and the Dwell presenters: Michela O’Connor Abrams, Michael Cannell, Michael Sylvester, Chelsea Holden Baker and Joel Turkel certainly know their stuff. Topics ranged from contemporary design trends to the virtual design world. Michael Sylvester, Dwell Content Strategist & Publisher of fabprefab.com, led a spirited seminar on modern prefab. He ended with some bullet-points on the myths and realities of this method and then opened the floor to Q&A. Attendees felt so strongly on the issue, one guest raised the topic of the Katrina aftermath and a full-fledged audience debate broke out.

We’ll be back at the building next Thursday (Nov 1.) for the Taste of T.

The 2nd Annual Masquerade Ball hosted by House Beautiful Magazine

By danielle

I’ve been to my fair share of Halloween costume parties, but I must say that last night’s Masquerade Ball hosted by House Beautiful, kicked some mask! The event was a benefit for Alpha Workshops (an inside source said that they raised $60k) A round of applause to the design industry, you sure know how to dress up for the occasion! NYDC’s Alex Lerman looked lovely toiling around as toile. Jan, Tyler, and Rachel from Artistic Tile’s dedicated three hours to make-up were well worth it and the creative crew at House Beautiful Magazine went as Crayola crayons. I always say, there’s something fun about dancing the night away incognito. I just hope everyone had a chance to pop into the photobooth and capture the moment. If not, see if our Design-Calendar crew caught you in the act…

The Rising Stars of Interior Design

By danielle

The Avery Boardman’s white cushy chairs, sectionals and sofas were filled with design lovers, eager to see the next generation of industry tastemakers. Moderated by Jamie Drake, who always knows how to make the discussion lively and fun, the session featured rising interior design stars: Vanessa De Leon, Vanessa De Leon Associates; James Andrew, James Andrew Interior Design and Diane Burgio, Beautiful Modern World. We found out more than just their decorating philosophies (fyi – they all agree that opulence is in!). We learned that Vanessa would love for the word glamilistic, a style she describes as a combination of glamorous and minimalist, to be in the dictionary one day. The dapper James has looked the same since he was a child, and Diane has a passion for surfing (you should see how cool her board is). Thanks to the Avery Boardman, New York Spaces and the IFDA of NY for putting this all together.

domino rocks

The glowing tented entrance to the Skylight Studio set the mood for last night’s domino bazaar grand opening celebration. We walked in and were immediately handed a large (and I mean large) organic bag to hold our future purchases
(ps it is also perfect for the beach or for laundry). Then we were off and running. The lofty space was divided by themes like art gallery, kitchen (where I chowed down on about 100, give or take, of the most amazing rosemary flat-bread crackers), lounge and marketplace to name a few. Between my colleagues and I, I think we bought something from every section. In all, it’s a well curated cash-and-carry exhibition of great design that is not to be missed. The bazaar runs through October 14.

Casa Dolce Casa – Italian Style

By danielle

avatar

Only in Italy could one have an opportunity to go to a party like this. it was quite the scene. Forward thinking Casa Dolce Casa launched the newest additions to their Casamood collection at a marketplace in the center of Bologna, just off the Piazza Maggiore. The tiles were displayed alongside merchants selling the finest Italian specialty foods and the most delectable fruits and vegetables I have ever seen.

Refin Grand Design Tour

By danielle

avatar

As part of our Cersaie experience, we were treated to a Grand Design Tour of 7 of Bologna’s most contemporary art galleries. The event was sponsored by the Italian tile manufacturer Refin. The company worked with 7 renowned figures from the international art scene with backgrounds as diverse as architecture, design, art, music and fashion. Artists included: Sandra Bermudez, Lucio Dalla, Michele De Lucchi, Elio Fiorucci, Peter Halley, and Karim Rashid. Each contributed a avant-garde new design to Refin’s “Pareti d’autore” collection. New additions were unveiled at each of the galleries.

Five days in Italy – Cersaie 2007

By danielle

Although we must admit the Alitalia plane ride was a bit long, the 156,000 square meter tile and bath show (the world’s largest!), delicious Italian meals and amazing shopping made it worth every minute. We spent 5 glorious days in Bologna, Italy as part of a delegation of US and Canadian journalists, architects and designers – all of us there to celebrate Cersaie’s 25-year anniversary edition. Show highlights included a seminar by Swiss architect Mario Botta, a cool central exhibit showcasing 16 famous artworks which were recreated in Italian tile as well as miles and miles of beautiful tiles in all formats (including 3m x 1m – WOW!), glamorous decorative wall ceramics and stunning bathroom furnishings from companies including S.I.M.A.S. At the end of the week, Cersaie 2007 saw close to 92,000 attendees, a record-breaking number of guests.

Even though we have been back for two days, we’re still dreaming of tile (and that incredible stracciatella gelato.)

Delta Launches Sky 360 Lounge

By danielle

Our friends at GenART hosted a high-flying event at Delta Sky 360, the new 3,800-square-foot temporary lounge built to give a preview of the new Delta in-flight experience. The interior is divided into several low-lit enclaves. The space plays with the elements using photo-panels of sky and clouds, wood flooring and large stacked stone columns flanking the bar area. The party rocked with nine plasma screens, a DJ, computer terminals, a selection of complimentary newspapers and magazines, video projections and elevated areas for dancing. We were invited to relax in the “demo” area that features Delta’s new international BusinessElite® seats which recline into a fully flat position and will be featured on the new 777 aircraft in spring 2008. The event was designed by Maneesh Goyal of MKG Productions. The space looks ‘new millennium mod’ with a series of white seating pods along the front windows and chic white club chairs in the lounge. It’s the kind of place that Mrs. Robinson might meet Jason Bourne for a two-martini lunch. Speaking of martinis, Midnight Sky, the signature cocktail menu created for Delta by nightlife proprietor Rande Gerber, was so good that I found it difficult to “return my drink to it’s upright position!”

The Baker showroom at the New York Design Center was transformed into one delightful evening in Vienna. Co-hosted by Traditional Home Magazine, the event honored the fabulous designs of Ms. Laura Kirar (who looked stunning as ever in her silk green dress and ankle boots.)

The space was filled with the chic and stylish including Bachman Clem of Amy Lau Design and Michael Tavano of Michael Tavano (Suite 1212 in The New York Design Center).
