Light It Up: IESNYC 2009 Student Lighting Competition Exhibition

By hawley

The Illuminating Engineering Society NYC Section (IESNYC) is once again hosting their annual Student Lighting Competition. From Wednesday, March 4 to Thursday, March 5 the IES will present the winning picks at the Helen Mills Event Space and Theater. The opening will be held on Wednesday from 6 pm until 10 pm, and will include a keynote address from Linnaea Tillett, PhD., and a PLDA workshops presentation that will follow the awards ceremony.

Each year competitors are asked to respond to a single theme- this year’s event is entitled Audible Light. The theme challenges participants to select a sound and create an abstract lighting composition that will express their sound visually. While the project is audio-inspired, the designs are not permitted to have actual audio elements. Previous themes have incorporated lighting with memory, immersive sensory experiences, and more.

The IESNYC is the technical authority on the lighting industry, comprised of every aspect of lighting professionals, from engineers to architects and designers. Seeking to improve knowledge about lighting, the society created the student competition to encourage exploration of the medium. Tillett, the award-winning founder of Tillett Lighting Design, will make the address as a leading expert in the field of lighting. Tillett and her team of architects and designers work to create functional, innovative, and artistic spaces. Be sure to check back later, as we will be posting a selection of the winning projects!
