Creating the DreamHome

By hawley

Inspired by the ever-changing world of fashion, Merchandise Mart’s DreamHome 2008 was a display of sophisticated and luxe design. With Elle Decor as the co-sponsor, the DreamHome brought “designs from the magazine to life.” It was set-up on ground floor of merchandise mart and thousands of people walked through it each day. To create the space, organizers picked Chicago designers, architects and even a finalist from Top Design and asked them to scour the Mart’s extensive range of showrooms for products, decorating inspirations and design innovations. Pulling from all sources, the leading professionals used these pieces to decorate and furnish the nine couture rooms.

Since the showcase (which was on display until the end of December 2008) was so well received, the AIA Chicago has asked two of the participants, Carlos Martinez of Gensler and Joan Craig of Lichten Craig Architects, to talk about their room designs and share their experience in a seminar titled “Creating the DreamHome.” Martinez did the home office, the result being a hybrid of work, production, and curated collection (of shoes!)- Fit for even the trendiest designer. And Joan Craig did the kitchen, a warm and elegant mix of traditional dark woodwork, modern steel, and a touch of French chateau, seen in the wall of silhouette plates. We think the event is a great way to get inspired to do great design work, just in time for spring!

The seminar will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2009 from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm at:
