can it!!! vipp 70th anniversary charity auction

Despite the cold rain that accompanied our travels this morning, we were happy to receive a warm and colorful welcome from Kimberly Oliver and the folks at the DWR store in SoHo for the preview of Vipp’s CAN IT! exhibition.

Marking the Danish design company’s 70th anniversary, Vipp kindly teamed up with DWR to host a charity auction benefitting DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, featuring the product that made them famous, but with a twist. Rows of Vipp pedal waste bins were on display that have been cleverly transformed by 35 different designers (David Rockwell, Calvin Klein), artists (Yoko Ono, John Baldessari) and celebrities (Avi James, Lady Bunny) into functional works of art.

Group of bins

From playful puns (like Robert Verdi’s “white trash” bin featuring images of Kid Rock and Amy Winehouse) to signature designs (like Kid Robot characters), each can revealed a piece of the creator’s personality that was oftentimes wacky but also sometimes puzzling. (Why did Helena Christensen’s bin feature a pack of alpacas?)

We also got to chat with David Stark, one of the designers in the exhibition whose cactus-shaped bin was a huge hit with the crowd. “I love to work with materials that are often thought of as waste or as humble, everday objects,” notes Stark. Crafted from layers of lazer-cut recycled cardboard, the design was inspired by Stark’s recent trip to Arizona, “where the landscape is rugged and truly incredible.” We couldn’t agree more!

From October 15 – 28, the 35 customized Vipp bins will be on display for public viewing and bidding at DWR: Tools for Living at 142 Wooster Street, New York City during regular store hours (11am-7pm). If you place bids on one or more cans, you will also be invited to a special gala auction on Wednesday, October 28th, hosted by Veronica Webb, Vipp, DWR and DIFFA.
