With the madness of ICFF dying down and the New York design scene recalibrating, it’s time to usher in summer in the city that never sleeps. High on our calendar is news we’ve received from our friends in the artisanal textile trade, D. Bryant Archie Textiles and Kea Carpets and Kilims. Be sure to check them both out, and stay posted to Design-Calendar for more news from ICFF and Salone del Mobile….

D. Bryant Archie Textiles

Our friends at this luxurious atelier specializing in hand-loomed blankets and throws have announced the opening of their NY showroom, located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. Be sure to stop by for an indulgence in textiles inspired by Navajo, Persian, and North African weaving traditions. Best of all, each piece helps support the Peruvian artisans who made it and was created using an environmentally friendly process.

D. Bryant Archie Textiles, located on 28 West 27th Street, suite #400, New York. Open 10am – 5pm Mon-Fri, and by appointment. (646) 593-7902/(718) 857-0523. info@dbryantarchie.com; dbryantarchie.com.

One of our favorites, the Khotan throw, is inspired by the colors of a Persian painting.

Kea Carpets and Kilims

This bazaar for textiles and carpets both amassed from owner Susan Gomersall’s 30+ years of world travel and designed in-house, will celebrate its upcoming exhibition of Moroccan Boucherouite “rag” rugs, “The Untrained Eye,” with an opening party this Saturday afternoon. The exhibition aims to discuss the social issues which caused Moroccan women in the 1960’s to incorporate scraps from old clothing, cotton, synthetic fibers, nylon, and even plastics, into a primarily wool- weaving tradition. Be prepared to be blown away by the beauty and color patterns of the pieces on display, such as the image below, which remind us of Ghanaian artist El-Anatsui’s vibrant tapestries made from salvaged bottle caps.

“The Untrained Eye,” Moroccan freeform, vintage “rag rugs” from the collections of Kea Carpets and Kilims, Brooklyn, NY and Alberto Levi Gallery, Milan, Italy. Opening party, Saturday, May 22, 4 – 8pm. 447 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Gallery hours, Tues – Sat 12 – 7pm; Sun 1 – 6pm. (718) 222-8087. www.keacarpetsandkilims.com
