One-of-a-Kind: Q & A with Designer, Dana Killion

By eva

This past Saturday, while at the One-of-a-Kind Show and Sale, we were able to sit down and chat with one of the event’s talented participants, Dana Killion. A fashion industry veteran, Killion’s clothing line of well-tailored and classic designs was on display at the New York show for the first time.  Dana was kind enough to provide us with a little insight into her world as a designer.

Q: How did you get started?

A: I have worked in the fashion industry for my entire career. I have a technical design background and after working for others for the majority of my career, two years ago I started my own label, Killion. The label was started because I did not want to wake up in 20 years and regret never trying this.

Q: What is your aesthetic?

A: Modern, relaxed elegance, architectural cut with fabrics that have movement and are comfortable

Q: Who is the woman you are designing for?

A: It is about attitude not age and how clothes fit into her lifestyle. I design for a woman with an urban state of mind. There is a big gap in the industry; looks are either too young or too matronly.  I’m designing for the market in between-the women who are young in their attitude and thinking.

Q: What are you inspired by?

A: Fabrics, shape and form! I’m inspired by the silhouettes of the 1940s- the great details and seaming.

Q: Why do you participate in the One-of-a-Kind Show?

A: The people who put on the One-of-a-Kind Show are fabulous to the artists. They think about the artists (from the lighting to the layout of the booths) and the shopping experience for the people who attend. I had great success last year with the show in Chicago and I am excited to be in New York this year!

Make sure to check out some of Dana Killion’s beautiful designs on her website: Her next two stops are the Chicago and Vancouver One-of-a-Kind Shows!
