Create- Donate-Support…Kids of Kathmandu

By danielle

Furniture designer Andrew Raible and his wife, photographer Jami Saunders, not only create art, now they are helping to fuel the lives of children in Kathmandu with it.

For their honeymoon, the newlyweds worked in an orphanage in Nepal last year. Not a traditional holiday by any means, but aren’t honeymoons all about celebrating new beginnings and embarking on a journey together anyway?!? The once-in-a-lifetime experience inspired Raible and Saunders to create the non-profit organization, Kids of Kathmandu, in an effort to help fund the orphanage through art and design. Pretty fantastic, right? Now, this is where you come in. We know two things about the Design-Calendar demographic…you’re talented and have a big heart. So we are asking our loyal readers to:

Create –
Designers and craftsmen are invited to build a desk/table costing no more than $125 in materials. Each desk should be able to retail between $750 and $1,000 but could sell for more at an auction.

Donate – The due date for desks is January 30, 2011.  The parameters of the desk should be close to 24” high x 40” wide x 20” deep. The hope is to receive a wide range of designs and materials, showing off unique and fun designs. All donations are tax deductible and your product will be recognized at the event.

Support – The children’s desks will be auctioned off at a public event in late February 2011. One desk sold will help support a child for an entire year including housing, education, and nutritional and medical needs.
