It’s a story familiar to any design fan. You could be looking for something in particular or you could be casually leafing through a magazine, but sooner or later it will happen: you see It.  Time slows down, the page around It fades to black until all you see is It under a spotlight.  Many report hearing music from Handel’s “Halleluljah” chorus or perhaps some Barry White.  You are drunk with happiness and love It as much as it is healthy to love an inanimate object, or any object really.  Your significant other asks, “Why don’t you look at me like that anymore?” but you do not hear, for there is only It.  Then you see that one monstrous phrase and it’s enough to swear you off design-love forever: “retail price.”  Well, It was fun while It lasted.

Challenging the “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” attitude in the most creative way possible is modern furnishings company Blu Dot.  In fact, they’ve taken it a step further and eliminated money all together.   “The Blu Dot Swap Meet” is giving us huddled masses a chance to barter our goods and services for their beautiful pieces.  Seriously.  All you have to do is get creative in coming up with goods or a service and propose a swap with Blu Dot’s furniture.  People have already managed to trade a spork collection, a donation of dog food to a local animal shelter, twenty-five filmed instances of spontaneous public dancing, and the self proclaimed “Ugliest Couch in the US” for some brand new furniture.  Even if you don’t have anything to swap, stop by and vote on your favorite swap proposals.

The Swap Meet will only continue through March 11th, so prepare your literally priceless miscellanea or your hidden talent and maybe you could be walking away with some very cool, very affordable new furniture.

But "reasonable" is so subjective!
