Duravit Makes a Splash in Mr. Popper’s Penguins!

By kristin-h

Although we all know that people love Duravit’s impressive line, Vero, we never imagined that it would be so adored by penguins too! This summer’s comedy, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, is a story of a businessman whose life gets turned upside down when he inherits six penguins and they turn his swanky NYC apartment into a snowy winter wonderland.  Vero is the perfect collection for Mr. Popper’s lavish bathroom, which matches the elegant style of the rest of his apartment (that is, before the penguins do some damage!) Don’t worry; there is still time to see Mr. Popper’s Penguins! But while you’re watching, make sure to take your eyes off of the lovable penguins for a few minutes to appreciate the great design of Duravit’s modern and polished Vero collection!

Here are a few pictures of these playful penguins splashing and waddling around the Vero collection!!

Weddings may bring a tear to our eye but ceremonies that combine architecture, marriage equality and free cupcakes make us straight up giddy! Celebrating last month’s historic legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in New York, our buddies at Architizer have teamed up with the wedding experts at The Knot to bring you the city’s first pop up chapel!

After running a rapid-fire competition, they’ve just announced the winners, Z-A Studio and ICRAVE, whose designs will be used in a day-long ceremony this Saturday, July 30! Each architecture firm will receive $3,000 to build the pop-up chapel of their dreams at Merchants’ Gate in Central Park, New York. Here’s a peek at each design:

Z-A Studio’s “KISS” chapel is a tulip-like structure with recycled honeycomb cardboard walls and a plywood base. According to the architects, the union of the two forms creates “a stable entity, that is more than the sum of its parts.” Amen!

ICRAVE’s Pop Up Chapel is an effervescent cascade of hanging ribbons that provide a colorful backdrop to the day’s proceedings. After the ceremonies are over, the ribbons will even be handed out to the married couples as keepsakes!

Architizer is providing the chapel. The Knot is providing the photographer, the officiant and the cupcakes. Now all they need are the couples!

Have you heard the news? Leucos, a Leucos USA brand known for its distinctive Italian contemporary hand-blown glass lighting, announced its latest designer collaboration with the beloved industrial designer Eva Zeisel. Did we mention she turns 105 this November 13!?! A self-declared “maker of useful things,” Zeisel’s upcoming collection for Leucos is her first foray in the lighting category. It will include two pendants, two wall sconces and two table lamps: one large and one small. Set to make its debut this fall, the new pieces show off her signature style and are inspired by organic forms with soft curves like those of the human body.

The lights first came to life as cutout models, a free-hand technique typical of much of Zeisel’s work. Still in its development stage, the designs are currently in the hands of Leucos’ skilled Italian artisans. Using the time-honored tradition of handcrafted Murano glass, they will transform Zeisel’s initial 2-D sketches into three-dimensional light fixtures. Her soft, sensuous design aesthetic is sure to shine brightly in her six new lights. According to Zeisel, “I always like to design at least two shapes together, so that I create a family that relates to each other. These lights are cousins.” In keeping with her purist passion, the lights will be available in a smooth, glossy white surface as well as natural earth tones. The line will include a shade-less table lamp and glowing, rounded pendants.

With this collection, Eva Zeisel joins an impressive list of Leucos luminaries. In the last half-century, the Italian lighting brand has collaborated with sixteen leading international designers, the likes of which include: Matteo Thun, Jorge Pensi, Danilo De Rossi and David Rockwell. At 104 years of age, Zeisel’s contributions to the world of design confirm her legendary status.

A Second Chance at NeoCon: NYDC’s First Look

By alexandra

The 7th annual first LOOK event at the New York Design Center was a great mid-week treat.  For those of us who couldn’t make it to NeoCon this year it was the perfect opportunity to bone up on what’s going on in the contract industry.  The multi-level bash offered us a look at nearly 250 new contract product introductions.  Delicious food and drinks and great company only sweetened the deal.  Another plus?  All attendees were offered the chance to win an  iPAD and/or an annual MoMA memberships for 2!

The first LOOK showrooms drew quite the crowd
