Product Runway Takes Over NYC

By Lauren Hill

This week, Marquee, New York City’s prestigious nightclub, was filled with its typical crowd of models, TV personalities and tastemakers. What brought these design-forward fashionistas out on a Monday night? The 2011 Product Runway! As a play off of the hit Lifetime television series, Project Runway, the Hospitality Industry Network (NEWH), a non-profit organization that helps build connections to major cities and thousands of hospitality professionals and products hosted a charity runway show and design competition in support of its scholarship program.

On November 14th, creative fashions walked down the runway from a challenge to design couture creations as part of the biggest fundraiser yet for the NEWH Greater New York. 16 prestigious hospitality firms were paired with 16 product manufactures with a $1,000 budget, a three-month deadline, and three little words, “make it work”.  The contributing manufacturers provided $400 worth of product material for the design and included everything from thin tile, crystals, carpet, to wallcoverings. The winner received $1,000 of scholarship, donated to their choice school and were given the chance to exhibit their design at the NEWG Greater New York Regional Tradeshow in June 2012.

The judging panel included Kevin Christiana from Season 4, Suede from Season 5, and Joshua McKinley from season 9.  Jack Mackenroth from Season 4 of Project Runway joined NBC host Lauren Scala for a night of fun, fashion, and fundraising.

The winning design went to ICrave +Swarovski, but all of the creations were noteworthy. We particularly loved the piece done by Seed Design featuring tiles from Stone Source in Manhattan.  These designers showed us how to put the “creative” in “couture”.
