What is an architectural drawing?

Have you seen The Storefront for Art and Architecture‘s latest exhibition, Aesthetics/Anesthetics? Located at 97 Kenmare Street in New York, the Storefront for Art and Architecture was founded in 1982 as a nonprofit organization committed to the advancement of innovative positions in architecture, art and design. For the next month, the space will display thirty newly commissioned architectural drawings by thirty emerging and established architects and firms. The drawings reveal different aspects of the space and are representative of the generative properties of each architect’s drawing. The exhibition positions the drawings against a wallpaper of “representational cliches,” including birds, children, and comics, which are usually used as representational tools in renderings so as to examine the aesthetic and anesthetic qualities of an architectural image. With that, the exhibition invites visitors to “reflect on the performing properties of the architectural drawing, to push drawing and architecture beyond inherited values,” and to think about these questions: What is it than architectural drawing does and how does it do it? How can we distill beauty from cosmetics? How can new modes of representation produce new architectures and new sensibilities?

In addition to the exhibition, a series of lectures and workshops that look at the purpose of architectural drawings will be presented throughout the course of the month. At the end of the exhibition, each of the thirty commissioned architectural drawings will be auctioned and proceeds will support the Storefront for Art and Architecture’s exhibitions and programs. A few of the commissioned artists include Vito Acconci from New York, Alisa Andrasek from London, Aziza Chaouni from Toronto and Fez, Luis Callejas from Colombia, Teddy Cruz from Tijuana, and Frida Escobedo from Mexico.

an inside look at new molten

By sevan

avatar

Although it seems that summer hasn’t quite hit New York City, Michael Aram is heating things up with the launch of the New Molten collection. Celebrating handcraftsmanship at its most basic level, the stainless steel beads on each piece of the collection are individually welded, making every bowl, frame, or tray absolutely unique.

Last Thursday’s Molten Month event at the Michael Aram Flagship Store at 136 West 18th gave an insider’s look on how each piece in the collection is made from conception to finished product. It was amazing to see how a few sketches on paper became exquisite and elegant pieces with everyday functionality. A piece starts off as an unassuming sheet of stainless steel that is then hammered and trimmed to shape with the help of simple molds and hand tools. Then, a long rod of steel is heated at one end and dripped onto the edge of the piece to create the trademark beading of the Molten Collection. And finally, in order to achieve the stainless steel glimmer, the piece is buffed using sari material—who knew saris made for more than just gorgeous dresses?

Want your own unique piece from the New Molten collection? Michael Aram is celebrating the launch of the expanded collection with a Mini Molten Frame gift on all purchases of $150 or more through the month June. And if you’re one to plan delectable summer parties, be sure to share your idea of a perfect dinner party with Michael Aram on Pinterest for a chance to win pieces from the New Molten collection!

Robert Allen’s impressive new line of fabrics, Naturals, was officially introduced last week at a launch party at the expansive Robert Allen showroom in the D&D Building in New York. In addition to great food and company, designers shared their stories and inspiration behind the fabrics, and allowed guests to share their thoughts as well. Robert Allen executives, including CEO, Phil Kowalczyk; Operating Vice President, Marketing, Peter Routsis; Senior Vice President, Design and Marketing, Jennie Wilde, and Director of Fabric Design, Anne Lekow, spoke about the Naturals collection and what it means for the company moving forward. Naturals is truly unique and stands apart from other naturally inspired fabrics in the ways it incorporates color. The designers for this line blended soft and exotic patterns and textures with bright and calm hues and tones. The endless variety of possible designs makes them a summer decorator’s dream! The company is also hosting a series of trunk shows around the country, featuring the Naturals collection. If you missed out on the launch event, this is a great opportunity to experience the line and learn more about it. Click here for more details.
