The House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year opened this morning in NYC’s famous Rockefeller Center. Designed by Mick de Giulio, the space is full of inspiring design ideas. The hierarchy of the home is changing, we learned, and the kitchen is becoming the new American living room. Mick took us on a tour this morning of what he says is the kind of kitchen he would like to live in.¬†Typical of his work, it had very few symmetrical compositions. “I love offsets. I love the dimensions they create,” he said.

The 1,000-square-foot kitchen conservatory features two fully-functioning kitchens, indoor and outdoor. The space brings together a wide array of premiere building and home decoration companies, including Belgard Hardscapes, Caesarstone, Kohler, KraftMaid, Whirlpool, Aircraft Scentsticks, Ann Sacks, Circa Lighting, The Container Store, de Giulio kitchen design, Frontgate, Glidden, Grandin Road, Grothouse, Hickory Chair, iRobot, Kravet, Michael Aram, Napoleon Fireplaces, Shaw Floors, and VTech. With its prime NYC address, it will be used throughout the week to host a series of events including cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs and product spotlights.

A kitchen designer by trade, de Giulio thought of every detail. From the Whirlpool appliances (which mix white glass and stainless steel) to the fireplace (meant to evoke the feeling of an old Scottish fisherman’s cottage), it showcases the juxtaposition of elements and style.

A corner of the countertop doubles as a fruit bowl.

de Giulio designed this sink for Kallista. Some of its features include an offset drain (to allow for more under sink storage), a sliding cutting board, knife sharper and towel rack

An appliance garage! Mick's proprietary paneling system provides stylish storage solutions. Tiles: Ann Sacks, Countertop: CaesarStone, Platter: Michael Aram
