The Best School in the World: Seven Finnish Examples from the 21st Century, explores how Finland has created one of the highest performing school systems in the world through an architectural perspective. The festivities kicked off last night at the Center for Architecture with a joint opening reception for The Best School in the World and The Edgeless School: Design for Learning exhibitions.

The series of events will continue throughout October and are part of the second annual month-long festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions in NYC – aka Archtober!

For a taste of Finnish school lunches Café 2 at the Museum of Modern Art will feature a school lunch as part of their menu. Back to School: A Taste of Finland will be held Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday October 1-12 at 12PM. More information can be found here.

The event Building Great Schools: Finland to New York will be taking place Tuesday, October 9 from 6-8PM at the Center for Architecture. The event is free for AIA members and $10 for non-members. The focus will be on successful collaboration between client and architect. The members behind two recently completed schools will discuss and compare their experiences and how they collaborated. Spaces for Learning features a discussion between Finnish and American specialists on the possibilities for creating better spaces for learning and education. Perspectives like design and environment studies, lifelong and life-wide learning, and corporate learning and workplace planning will be discussed. The event will be on Thursday, October 11 from 6-8 PM at Steelcase 4 Columbus Circle New York, NY. RSVP t0 info@design-city.net by October 8.

And finally, city architects and educational policy leaders from New York and Finland will be comparing the best practices in school design at Nurturing Minds: Educational Design Policies, Finland/New York. The event is taking place on Tuesday, October 16 from 6-8 PM at the Center for Architecture and you can RSVP here.
