Last week, on a near perfect summer night, we climbed our way to the rooftop of the Scholastic Building in Soho (with about 200 other design professionals) for the second annual Picnic by Design. Like the summer counterpart to DIFFA‘s popular Dining by Design event, clusters of design-lovers gathered around tailor-made picnic baskets revolving around themes like Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland (though not all necessarily as whimsical).

It was heart-warming to see the level of detail that the 40+ design teams put into each vignette. One of my favorites was the Liberace-themed basket by Dee Kemper (of Domoore Designs) who went so far as to build a rhinestone-clad baby piano adorned with gold candelabras and homemade sticky buns from Liberace’s own cookbook! In the end, the event organizers raised over $30,000 for DIFFA to support people living with HIV and AIDS.
