Milan-Bound #salonedelmobile #fuorisalone

April is the time when all serious design lovers make tracks for Milan and the weeklong extravaganza known as the Milan Furniture Fair or I Saloni.  This year will be particularly charged as the city of Milan prepares for the opening of the EXPO (World’s fair) in the first days of May.

The Expo will take place right next to the Fairgrounds of Salone so there may be some nice sneak peeks of some of the taller architectural country pavilions for show goers at the Rho Fairgrounds.

This year, there is the additional biannual focus on lighting so attendees can visit Euroluce – the most exciting and extensive worldwide array of dazzling new fixtures. As always, a lot of  inspiring events are taking place outside the tradeshow grounds and are spread across the city in pockets of concentrated design goodness that are a joy to discover. #fuorisalone

The Brera district will feature some special country wide exhibitions like the Austrian Design Pioneers‐Consolato Generale D’Austria  (La Pelota, via Palermo 10), Belgium is Design  (Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, via Brera 28), Berlin Design Selection‐Dynamo Design Berlin e.V . (via Goito 3 ); and a special “The Garden of Wonders. A Journey Through Scents” exhibition featuring Tord Boontje, Fernando and Humberto Campana, Dimore Studio, Front, Jaime Hayon, Piero Lissoni, Jean‐Marie Massaud and Nendo  (Orto Botanico di Brera, via Brera 28.

In the Ventura Lambrate district the Polish cultural organization, Culture. PL  will present Do it Your Way an innovative new interactive exhibit that will let visitors literally play with the the newest designs from Poland.

Moleskine joins forces with Ventura Lambrate to set up a Documentation Centre for design innovation. With the Moleskine smart notebook, Creative Cloud connected in hand, a group of young design reporters will roam the once-industrial warehouses and streets to sketch and document its design objects, materials and technological solutions as well as its installations, crowd and spaces. #IdeasNoted

Sustainability will be the main focus of the “Good Design: The Natural Circle”, located in the heart of Milan: Trove, Foscarini and Seletti are some of the brands featured in the exhibition.

It is always worth a trip to the hopping Zona Tortona and the Super Studio.  Other highlights our annual visits to the magical garden of the famed retailer Rossana Orlandi, the Triennale Design Museum, the Corso Como, and the new downtown piazza created in  honor of Italian woman architect Gae Aulenti.

As extensive as this all sound, it is just the tip of the iceberg, we’d need a book to capture it all.  In fact, we recommend grabbing a copy of the Interni guide to activities around town — it is also available as a downloadable Itunes app!
