Each year, venerable design festival Design Miami/ presents its Design Visionary Award to an individual or group that has significantly impacted the wide world of design. Leading up to the fair, this year’s award – presented by luxury Italian watchmaker Officine Panerai – was bestowed upon New York City-based SHoP Architects. As the winners, SHoP has designed an entrance plaza for the fair, entitled Flotsam & Jetsam. The plaza explores the contemporary position of the city of Miami, alluding to the city’s beachside environment while speaking to its recent emergence as a center of creativity, art, and design. SHoP’s plaza will make extensive use of 3D printing technology, which it is committed to realizing on a larger, more structural scale. By using 3D printing in this context, SHoP intends to display how revolutionary building technology can work in tandem with the vibrant contemporary culture of Miami. After Design Miami/, Flotsam & Jetsam will be moved to the Miami Design District’s Jungle Plaza where it will host cultural programming in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.
SHoP Architects is currently working on several high profile projects. In Brooklyn, the firm’s plans for a 1,000+ foot tall residential tower at 9 DeKalb Avenue (Brooklyn’s tallest) promises to reshape the Brooklyn skyline and contribute to the ongoing vertical expansion of the borough. Also in New York City, SHoP is working on a master plan for the redesign of LaGuardia Airport, a new esplanade along the East River in Lower Manhattan, and residential and mixed use buildings throughout the city. SHoP’s ambitious program has been lauded for its positive contributions to New York’s urban landscape and recognized for its great dexterity in crafting spaces with a range of purposes that exceed the needs of their users and exist in harmony with their environment.
In winning the Design Visionary Award – now in its third year – SHoP joins previous illustrious winners Yves Behar (2015) and Peter Marino (2014). SHoP’s presence at Design Miami/ gives the firm the opportunity to introduce its groundbreaking work to the dynamic metropolis of Miami and to contribute to the ongoing cultural renaissance of the city. Design Miami/ is a premier venue for design that brings designers, curators, collectors, and design enthusiasts together alongside Art Basel’s Miami fair in December and Art Basel in June.
